Deregistration from the Netherlands
Are you moving abroad for more than 8 months? Make sure you deregister from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) Rotterdam.
For whom
- You will be staying abroad for more than 8 months within a 12-month period. These 8 months do not have to be consecutive.
Are you going abroad for less than 8 months? Then go to the page Tijdelijk vertrek buitenland doorgeven. Click 'Translate' in the upper right corner to select English. - You are registered with the municipality of Rotterdam.
- You are 16 years or older.
Conditions
You can report the departure of multiple people. The others must be registered with you at the same address.
This includes:- your partner
- your children
- your parents
Do you have a cohabitation agreement? Then you and your partner must each report your move abroad separately.
- Provide your address abroad as completely as possible when reporting your departure.
If your new address is not yet known, please let us know which country you are moving to. - You may report your departure up to 28 days before your departure.
You will be deregistered as a resident and will no longer be registered in Rotterdam. - Sometimes the municipality will still require you to come to the counter.
If necessary, the municipality will contact you. - If you deliberately provide incorrect information, the municipality may impose a fine.
- Contact us as soon as possible if your departure has been postponed, even though you have already reported it.

Deregistration is free of charge.
How long it takes
Your departure will be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) within 5 weeks. Your application must be complete.
Are you leaving later? Then your departure will be registered in the BRP on the date you actually left.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, this is possible. For example, when moving to or from a location abroad, customs can ask you to present an inward or outward clearance certificate for your household effects.

You will receive an invoice to be paid after receiving the document.
An extract is € 9.90 plus mailing costs.
You receive a free extract of deregistration if you are moving to the Caribbean Netherlands (the countries Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten and the special municipalities Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius).
You need this document to register in the Caribbean Netherlands.

Report your move to the municipality you're moving to. You must also report your move abroad to that municipality as soon as you're ready to leave.
The municipality is receiving reports that mail is not being delivered correctly in some countries. It takes longer than in the Netherlands. Sometimes mail doesn't arrive at all.
This can prevent you from registering, for example, if you need to show proof of deregistration beforehand. Therefore, check with the organization abroad to see if your mail has arrived.
