The 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Rotterdam in 2020. Thanks to Duncan Laurence's victory, for two whole weeks next spring the Maasstad will be devoted to the largest music event in the world.

Shows

The Eurovision Song Contest takes place in May. There are different shows, including the two semi-finals (12 and 14 May) and the final grand finale (16 May). In addition, there are also various rehearsal shows where fans can be present.

Ticket sales for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 start on December 12 at 12.00 pm via the official sales channel: tickets.songfestival.nl. This is the first round of three sales rounds of tickets for both live shows and dress rehearsals (called Jury and Family show). These are a total of 9 shows. Extra tickets will be available for all shows at the end of January and mid-March. Keep an eye on songfestival.nl and the social channels! Note: Only buy tickets through the official sales channel and not at other sites.

Book accommodation during Eurovision period

Are you looking for a stay in or around Rotterdam during the Eurovision period? We are happy to help you on your way. On the website of Rotterdam Tourist Information you will find an overview of renowned accommodations. Assure yourself of the best price/quality ratio and preferably book directly at the accommodation itself. Beware of taking over rooms via third parties. These are often many times more expensive. In addition, your booking may be invalid. Note: At the moment the various accommodations still have many rooms reserved for the organization of the Songfestival for country delegations, crew and press. A number of these rooms will become available over time. Waiting with books can therefore pay off. Keep an eye on this website for current information.

Theme Eurovision Song Contest is ‘Open Up’

From 8 to 16 May, the Eurovision Song Contest will be felt throughout the city and will be visible with a festive and diverse city program. In the run-up to the contest there will be club nights, concerts, exhibitions and sing-along parties all over the city – such as in Maassilo, where Duncan Laurence recorded his winning number Arcade, and of course on the stage of the Euro Village, which is free to enter. This is the ultimate venue where artists competing in the Eurovision Song Contest will come together with new talent and established names from the city and all over the country.

In addition to two semi finals and the concluding grand final, there will be several different rehearsal shows that fans can attend. Duncan Laurence's victory means that the Netherlands gets to organise the Eurovision Song Contest once more. The 2020 edition will be a collaboration between NPO, AVROTROS and NOS, in co-production with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union).

Rotterdam is a mediagenic city with international appeal and a diverse population, a city of innovation, creativity and architecture. And it has Ahoy, the best venue in the Netherlands. The value in terms of city marketing is substantial. It offers our city many opportunities. Money will be spent, the cultural sector will be showcased and we will bring people together.

An urban project organisation has been set up by the Municipality of Rotterdam that will develop and prepare the various components described in the bid book. Examples include: side programmes, a volunteer policy, city dressing, safety and security, etcetera.

Together with the project organisation (NPO/NOS/AVROTROS and the EBU) we will first draft a follow-up schedule. More details will be available soon.

The Eurovision Song Contest contributes to greater exposure for the city and reinforces our city's positive image. Our reputation as a festival and event city, as an inclusive city, as a city of music and an attractive conference and event city where we can handle events of this calibre. With around 1,500 journalists, images of Rotterdam will be shown all around the world. The event also provides jobs, especially in the hotel sector, catering and hospitality establishments and cultural institutions.

The Eurovision Song Contest will be a party for all Rotterdammers. This is why we want to make the contest and the side programme accessible to as many of our fellow city dwellers as possible. We will do this in a number of ways:

  • Tickets will be made available, for example to people on a low income. The exact details and implementation are currently being developed and will be announced at a later date.
  • Everyone will be able to have fun at Euro Village, a stage at a freely accessible site in the city centre.
  • There is a lot of interest from enthusiastic volunteers. They are extremely welcome in all their diversity: from students and those who have been fans from the very beginning, to proud Rotterdammers and people disadvantaged on the labour market.
  • Creative talent will participate: Rotterdam is a true city of music, with talented people in all genres of music. There is room in the city budget to support cultural projects financially during the ESC.  Examples include club nights, concerts, sing-along parties and more. In short: talent, institutions and platforms in the city will be challenged to play their part. However, a mix is also welcome: both budding talent and established names, famous faces and hidden gems.

The costs for Rotterdam are estimated at 15.5 million euros. The municipality of Rotterdam is contributing 14.5 million euros to this and the province of South Holland 1 million. The largest part is financed with money that was budgeted in 2019, but can no longer be spent in 2019. The rest is paid from the Culture and Event budget. The financial coverage of the ESC is not at the expense of budgets for achieving important policy goals in 2019. This is a common method.

The Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre will be delivered in September 2020, but that space is not needed to accommodate the Eurovision Song Contest. The existing Ahoy has more than enough space. The construction is taking place outside the existing building and will not cause any inconvenience. What's more, by then the extension will be 'closed' externally and building work will only continue inside, so there will no longer be any construction cranes on site. The façade is finished and looking good. As of September 2019 we will already be able to use the new entrance.
