Frequently asked questions

Rotterdam is a mediagenic city with international appeal and a diverse population, a city of innovation, creativity and architecture. And it has Ahoy, the best venue in the Netherlands. The value in terms of city marketing is substantial. It offers our city many opportunities. Money will be spent, the cultural sector will be showcased and we will bring people together.

An urban project organisation has been set up by the Municipality of Rotterdam that will develop and prepare the various components described in the bid book. Examples include: side programmes, a volunteer policy, city dressing, safety and security, etcetera.

Together with the project organisation (NPO/NOS/AVROTROS and the EBU) we will first draft a follow-up schedule. More details will be available soon.

The Eurovision Song Contest contributes to greater exposure for the city and reinforces our city's positive image. Our reputation as a festival and event city, as an inclusive city, as a city of music and an attractive conference and event city where we can handle events of this calibre. With around 1,500 journalists, images of Rotterdam will be shown all around the world. The event also provides jobs, especially in the hotel sector, catering and hospitality establishments and cultural institutions.

The Eurovision Song Contest will be a party for all Rotterdammers. This is why we want to make the contest and the side programme accessible to as many of our fellow city dwellers as possible. We will do this in a number of ways:

  • Tickets will be made available, for example to people on a low income. The exact details and implementation are currently being developed and will be announced at a later date.
  • Everyone will be able to have fun at Euro Village, a stage at a freely accessible site in the city centre.
  • There is a lot of interest from enthusiastic volunteers. They are extremely welcome in all their diversity: from students and those who have been fans from the very beginning, to proud Rotterdammers and people disadvantaged on the labour market.
  • Creative talent will participate: Rotterdam is a true city of music, with talented people in all genres of music. There is room in the city budget to support cultural projects financially during the ESC.  Examples include club nights, concerts, sing-along parties and more. In short: talent, institutions and platforms in the city will be challenged to play their part. However, a mix is also welcome: both budding talent and established names, famous faces and hidden gems.

The costs for Rotterdam are estimated at 15.5 million euros. The municipality of Rotterdam is contributing 14.5 million euros to this and the province of South Holland 1 million. The largest part is financed with money that was budgeted in 2019, but can no longer be spent in 2019. The rest is paid from the Culture and Event budget. The financial coverage of the ESC is not at the expense of budgets for achieving important policy goals in 2019. This is a common method.

The Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre will be delivered in September 2020, but that space is not needed to accommodate the Eurovision Song Contest. The existing Ahoy has more than enough space. The construction is taking place outside the existing building and will not cause any inconvenience. What's more, by then the extension will be 'closed' externally and building work will only continue inside, so there will no longer be any construction cranes on site. The façade is finished and looking good. As of September 2019 we will already be able to use the new entrance.
