On the eve of the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen, the city of Rotterdam hosted on 3 and 4 December a unique international conference on sustainable urban area development. For two days cities, scientists, experts and businesses discussed the best blueprint for cities.

Jeremy RifkinHigh profile international speakers like EU-adviser Jeremy Rifkin and toparchitect Winy Maas captured the hearts and minds of more than 400 delegates, of which 40% came outside the Netherlands. On the last day the participants collectively undersigned a statement that they will co-create New Green Deals. These signatures were presented to the Copenhagen summit to show that cities worldwide can really make the difference.

The city of Rotterdam would like to continue working on making the city more sustainable.

In order to stay connected and co-create the new green deals we would like to invite all those who are interested in actively participating in this challenge to join us:

  • The LinkedIn community ‘Rotterdam Global Urban Summit 2009’ for a network of people that are willing to share their ideas and expertise on urban area development and access to all presentations of the conference.
  • The wiki page ‘Green Deals’ that contains reports of the sessions and links to all relevant footage of the conference. On this wiki you are invited to share your know-how, especially on the key components for sustainable cities!

The next event will focus on the challenge Delta cities have in times of climate change and how they can adapt in order to survive.
