Rotterdam is run by a city council and the Municipal Executive Committee which comprises of the Mayor and Aldermen.

Mayor Aboutaleb  

The city council of Rotterdam consists of 45 members and is elected by the people of Rotterdam every four years. Its main task is to monitor the Mayor and Aldermen.

At this moment the council consists of:

  • PvdA (social democrats, 18 seats)
  • Leefbaar Rotterdam (local party, 14 seats)
  • CDA (Christian democrats, 3 seats)
  • VVVD (liberals, 3 seats)
  • SP (socialists, 3 seats)
  • GroenLinks (green left, 2 seats)
  • ChristenUnie-SGP (small Christian parties, 1 seat)
  • D66 (democrats, 1 seat)




The next elections will take place in 2010. The Mayor and Aldermen form the Municipal Executive Committee and have extensive governmental responsibility. This committee comprises of the Mayor (Mr Ahmed Aboutaleb), 8 Aldermen and a town clerk. The latter is an administrative member appointed by the city council. The Rotterdam municipal authority employs about 19,000 people, many of whom work in one of the 33 municipal departments and authorities formulating and implementing local policy.

These departments and authorities include:

  • The Development Corporation Rotterdam (“OBR”), responsible for the spatial and economic development of the city, telephone (010) 489 69 44.
  • The Rotterdam Public Works Department (“GW”), acts as project manager and project developer for infrastructural projects, telephone (010) 489 69 22.
  • The Department for Urban Planning and Housing (“dS+V”), responsible for urban development in Rotterdam, telephone (010) 489 69 66.
  • The Economic Development Board Rotterdam (“EDBR”), advises the city council on economic projects and the enhancement of international orientation of trade and industry, telephone (010) 205 35 60.
