As a foreigner you are required to have a health insurance covering all risks before you arrive in the Netherlands.

Standard Package
Every inhabitant of the Netherlands who pays income taxes is obliged to take out medical insurance for a legally determined standard package. Children under the age of 18 must be officially included in the insurance but do not pay contribution. The standard package covers costs for hospitalisation, medications and most medical treatments. Dental costs are only included in the basic package for those under 18. You are free to choose the insurance company of your preference. Every insurance company is obliged to accept you regardless of age, gender or health situation. You can select from several types of insurances. The annual contribution for 2012 is approximately € 1,300 per person with € 225 excess per person.

Additional Insurance
On top of the obligatory standard package you can insure yourself for special medical costs. Health insurance companies are not obliged to accept you unconditionally. They can insist on a number of specific requirements.

Income-related contribution
Every person who has an income pays income-related contribution to a maximum of € 1,875 on top of the insurance contribution. The Tax Authorities collect this contribution.
