A family doctor (“Huisarts”) is always the first point of contact in case of physical or mental problems. If necessary, your family doctor will refer you to a specialist or a hospital.

It is important to register with a family doctor soon after your arrival in the Netherlands. Addresses can be found in the Yellow Pages or in the telephone directory (heading “Artsen” or “Huisartsen”). In case of an emergency, call the doctor hotline: (010) 420 11 00.

Dentist
You can call on a dentist for a regular check-up (for instance every six months) and for treatment of acute dental problems. Addresses can be found in the Yellow Pages or in the telephone directory (heading “Tandartsen”). In case of an emergency, call the dentist line: (010) 455 21 55.

Emergency
In case of an accident call the national emergency number 112. You will be asked whether you need the police, the fire brigade or an ambulance. Most hospitals are on call 24 hours a day.

Home Care
Home Care can be obtained from “Thuiszorg Rotterdam”. On payment of an annual subscription, you are eligible for various forms of assistance, nursing and care at home, for example in case of pregnancy or chronic illness.

Pharmacy
Medication can be issued by a pharmacy on prescription from your family doctor or dentist. Mild medications such as pain killers and simple cough mixtures can be bought without prescription at a drugstore or pharmacy. Google has a list with all pharmacies in Rotterdam.

Travel vaccinations
Travel vaccinations and relevant information can be obtained from the GGD Travel Clinic (“Medisch Centrum Buitenland”), telephone for appointments (010) 433 98 99.
